Good Introductory Book on Investing?

#1
Hello Everyone!

I am looking to buy a good book which provides the fundamentals of investing. I have been trading online for a couple of months, but it has been mainly applying for IPOs or buying reliable stocks on advice. Of course, I have a couple of very reliable sources whom I can trust, but still I feel that I want to make my own decisions when it comes to investing.

I understand the basics of trading and now I want to take the next step. Things like what are futures and options, day trading, analysing a company's fundamentals and performance, etc.

Any idea which book can cater to my needs?

Thanks in advance!

I doubt you will get all your answers in one single book.

I got a lot of books on technical analysis, but only a few on fundamentals.

For basic stock-picking (based on fundamentals), a good start would be:

Buffettology: The Previously Unexplained Techniques That Have Made Warren Buffett The World's Most Famous Investor

by Mary Buffett.

If you are a beginner, I would suggest you stay away from derivatives.

Even for day-trading, you would need to understand basics of Technical Analysis.

Here is a list of some good books on Technical Analysis.

For fundamental analysis, Rajiv Khatlawala referred a nice book

"Fundamental Analysis" by Raghu Palat - Publisher : Vision books. You should get details at www.visionbooksindia.com

I am also in process of getting it. Only advantage expected is that examples will be related to indian companies, thus making it more interesting to read.

I also second Alchemist on derivatives. First try some "paper trade" in derivatives.

Options are something where 90 % people lose money, these are complex products and belong to people for whom they were designed for.

Thanks guys! Point taken about derivatives. I wasn't intending to trade in those unless I had absolute understanding.

I will check out 'Buffettology' and 'Fundamental Analysis' as suggested. I guess they will provide good information on analyzing performance of a company. But will these have answers to questions like: What are futures and options, day trading etc? Just for my understanding.

Also, where would these books be available? Landmark?

Thanks for the information. I really appreciate it.

Yes, I read almost all the articles on rediff get ahead. It indeed is a good source of information. I actually use the RSS reader in my email client so that I do not miss any article ;) But the information is not very organized there.

I will check out the link that you have provided. Thanks!

I have it. It is diff to read for a beginner and badly written.

I will buy some better book. :damnmate:
any other that you would like to suggest?

========================

the problem is that there are only a few beginner-level books available in India.

and usually I don't like stocks-related books written by Indian authors. Most of them are superficial and hardly go beyond the basics.

Hi,

I tried to find the books mentioned in this thread in the local book store but did not have much success. I will keep looking.

In the mean time, do you know how is the book "The Intelligent Investor" By Benjamin Graham and Jason Zweig? How is it from the fundamental analysis aspect? I am asking about this because I found this one in the store but did not buy before getting some feedback.

Thanks.

You can try online book stores. They have a larger collection and are cheaper too.

I have tried Fabmall (Indiaplaza) and Rediff Books. Both are very reliable.

Graham's book's very popular and I guess it's a masterpiece. You can buy it if you wish.
