How You Could Get Cheated At A Petrol Pump

#1
Some time ago I got cheated at an Indian Oil Corporation petrol pump in the Kharadi (Pune) area on NH4 (Kharadi to Kalyani Nagar side). I wanted to highlight it so that forum members could be cautious.

I went to the petrol pump and asked for a "full tank". The guy started filling it and as the cost of the petrol on the indicator reached Rs 200, he said there is some issue, there is some "back pressure" and asked me to start the car. I did that and as I came out to check what is happening, another guy came us and asked me if I would be paying by card/cash and several irrelevant questions.

I saw that the guy continued filling the tank without resetting the counter. but at the end he demanded total cost + Rs 200.

I confronted him with the facts but he insisted that he has reset the counter. The modus operandi is that the person asking irrelevant questions distracts your attention for some time so you are not able to determine if the counter was reset.

I told them I knew they were cheating me and also told them the modus operandi as I saw it.

I did not pursue the matter further with the police because at that time my license plate had got spoilt and few digits were missing

My advice to everyone:

If the person filling the tank says there is "some problem" mid-way when you ask for a full tank, ask him to stop. Pay whatever is on the counter and simply drive away.

My friend had same experience where his father while petrol filing saw the counter jumping from 500 to directly 600.

In other case same as yours a scratch polisher guy comes and start demonstrating his product on your car and you get busy saying him no and the other starts the petrol filling. Similarly there are instances where other petrol refill chap says your car body to be shaking from behind and you get busy in fake conversation and all.

Best is as soon as you go to counter shut your car. Put it on ignition setting and stand in front of the machine and say start only when it zero or it's better not to go for full tank and better 500-1000 rupees and later see how much it's filled. And then better top up or make a revisit again in same day and do top up then. Also just ignore what other says once you are at petrol counter and keep watch on petrol filler and machine.

I have observed that most petrol bunks cheat (however careful you are).

I stay in Bangalore , so from many years I make a point to fill my car when I find a SHELL petrol bunk around.

It is very easy to have mal-calibrated machines, that will deliver 950ML and show 1 liter on meter.

Just simple settings on machine will do it for you.

Many times people wonder while doing full tank of empty tank that how they can fill 11 liters in 10 liters tank?:reddy:

Just got cheated a few minutes back.

Petrol prices are scheduled to increase by midnight today.

While coming back from office around 11:30 pm, I saw my regular petrol pump open, so thought of getting full tank.

I got the full tank done, asked for a printed receipt checked the price and volume, satisfied came back to home.

Now looking at the bill at second time I noted that the bill was dated 29th June (few minutes past midnight) instead of 28th june, so in effect he charged me the increased rate instead of the old rate.

Lost 35 odd bucks.

Recently I did a full tank.Normally I do 500 top up. But was sure this time price might increase up to 3 to 5 rupee.

So according to my Nano indicator, there might be anything around 5 liter. It has 15 liter tank as mentioned.

On full tank it filled 12 liters.I am surprised that my tank is 17 liters with this indication. Though I know tanks are usually bigger than mentioned. But not so big that it can grasp 2 liters up to since it never happened in last 4 years of full tank experience.

Also though placed at pumps, chaps over there are not interested in filling the car with measuring jars. And also others cars in line are ready enough you fill directly to our cars rather than wasting time on this chap.

To the last poster, honestly how it can really happen when someone did exactly less that you have been promised and you really need to attach your money to the less amount of fuel really ? How do you plan to go with that ? Don't be fooled.
